Abstract

The rapid proliferation of digital platforms has centralized the application programming interface as a fundamental boundary resource, facilitating vast ecosystems of third-party developers, modular services, and end-users. As these ecosystems expand in complexity and scale, platform owners face the critical challenge of establishing effective governance mechanisms that regulate third-party interactions without stifling innovation or degrading developer experience. This paper presents a comprehensive process modeling approach to understand the intricate relationships between API governance rules and integration quality within platform ecosystem services. By mapping the lifecycle of API governance from policy formulation and architectural standardization to runtime enforcement and lifecycle deprecation, this research identifies the specific operational pathways through which governance interventions influence integration outcomes. The study explores the inherent tension between strict control mechanisms, which enhance security and predictability, and flexible governance models that promote rapid adaptation and generative innovation. Drawing on principles from digital platform literature and enterprise architecture, the proposed process model provides a structured analytical lens for evaluating how specific governance configurations impact functional reliability, performance optimization, and backward compatibility. The findings suggest that carefully calibrated, context-aware governance rules significantly improve long-term integration quality while mitigating the risks of ecosystem fragmentation. This research contributes to the emerging discourse on digital boundary resources by offering actionable insights for platform orchestrators seeking to optimize ecosystem health through strategic API governance.
